Most physician-loan pages treat dentists as a footnote. Michigan's loan repayment programme puts them in the first line of its own purpose statement.

MSLRP and dentists

MDHHS describes the programme as assisting "the recruitment and retention of medical, dental, and mental health primary care providers". Dental is named in the purpose, not buried in an appendix, and dentists (DDS/DMD) appear in the eligible provider types.

Everything else applies the same way: up to $300,000 tax-free over up to 10 years, consecutive two-year agreements, 40 hours a week for at least 45 weeks a year, an eligible nonprofit site, and a 20% employer contribution. The award.

The mortgage side

A DDS or DMD is a core eligible degree on essentially every physician mortgage programme. The two features that matter are the same ones that matter for a physician:

  • Qualifying on a signed contract up to 150 days before the start date. The rule.
  • The treatment of student debt, which for a dental graduate is frequently larger relative to income than for a physician. How it is counted.

★ Where a dental file genuinely differs

Practice ownership. A dentist is far more likely than a physician to be buying into, or starting, a practice around the same time as a house.

That matters to a mortgage file in two ways, and we would rather raise them early:

  • Self-employment changes the income documentation. An associate on a contract is straightforward. An owner, or someone becoming one, is a different underwrite, and a practice-acquisition loan sits alongside the mortgage in your debt picture.
  • Timing collides. Buying a practice and buying a house in the same quarter is common and is worth sequencing deliberately rather than by accident.

★ If a practice purchase is anywhere in your next twelve months, say so at the first conversation. It changes the advice, and finding out later is the expensive version.

One MSLRP note for dentists

The site requirements do not bend for dentistry: an eligible nonprofit practice site serving an ambulatory population, generally inside a HPSA. A private associate position in a well-served suburb is unlikely to qualify however strong the candidate.

The Genesee County carve-out and the HPSA score 8+ route apply to dentists on the same terms as everyone else. The routes in.

Frequently asked questions

Can a dentist get a physician mortgage in Michigan?

Yes. DDS and DMD are core eligible degrees on essentially every physician mortgage programme, not an extension. The same features apply: qualifying on a signed employment contract up to 150 days before the start date, and a student debt treatment built around training-era balances.

Are dentists eligible for Michigan loan repayment?

Yes. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services describes the programme as supporting medical, dental and mental health primary care providers, and dentists holding a DDS or DMD are among the eligible provider types. The same maximum of up to $300,000 over up to ten years and the same 20 percent employer contribution apply.

How does buying a dental practice affect a mortgage application?

It changes the income documentation and adds debt. An associate working on a contract is a straightforward file, while an owner or incoming owner is a self-employment underwrite, and a practice acquisition loan sits alongside the mortgage in the debt picture. A practice purchase planned within the next year should be raised at the first conversation.

Does a private dental practice qualify for MSLRP?

Usually not. The programme requires an eligible nonprofit practice site serving an ambulatory population, generally within a Health Professional Shortage Area, so a private associate position in a well-served area is unlikely to qualify. The Genesee County waiver and the HPSA score of eight or higher route apply to dentists on the same terms as other providers.
